Melton Christian College Toolern Vale Stage 4

A flexible new learning building designed to grow with the school, now and well into the future.

Stage 4 is the next addition to Melton Christian College's Toolern Vale campus, a school we've designed from scratch on a greenfield site. The new classroom building will give a growing school room for Year 6 and Year 7, a foothold for secondary, and flexible spaces that adapt as student numbers rise. Construction starts in 2027, with completion scheduled for mid 2028.

More Room, Ahead of Demand

Building on our strong relationship with the College, including masterplans for both its campuses, the school asked us to help with a run-down, underused library full of compliance issues. It also needed another classroom, without the money or time for a new building. The brief was to create a classroom, remove the mezzanine, use the space more efficiently and give the library a fresh look.

Growing at the School's Own Pace

Student numbers don't grow evenly, so space has to be ready before it's needed. We needed a building that suits Year 6 and Year 7 to begin with and can adapt as the school moves from two streams to three, while also supporting more self-guided learning, where a few staff can supervise larger groups of students working on their own.

Testing Ideas Together

Working with the head of campus, head of secondary and head of online, we tested several versions of the brief, including options with and without food technology, and explored what each option would mean for the school's growing needs. Together, we landed on more flexible learning areas, with a central breakout space and a multi-purpose STEAM room.

A Building That Changes With the College

The design delivers five general learning areas, a STEAM room, a breakout space, academic studios for more than 20 staff and meeting rooms. As the school grows, it will become a dedicated Year 5 and 6 building. Even before construction, it's a real selling point for families considering Year 7, and a big part of the school's marketing.
